Moderation
by Paramahamsa Hariharananda
Human life is a rare chance and opportunity to grow. Life is short and there are ample obstacles, but in spite of that, you have immense strength and potentiality. To achieve success in life, you need to be careful, moderate, and balanced.
It is written in the Bhagavad Gita (6:17):
yuktaharaviharasya yuktacheshtasya karmasu
yuktasvapnavabodhasya yogo bhavati duhkhaha,
"The path of meditation requires a moderate, regulated life, avoiding too much or too little food, work, and sleep, or use of the senses. The attention must abide in the soul all the time. For such a person, yoga destroys all sorrows."
A life of moderation is the foundation of success. Moderation and balance are necessary in every step of your life. Even contemplation and meditation should be limited. Lord Buddha was a king's son, who left his house in search of Truth. Later, Buddha decided that he would not stop meditating until he was realized, so he let his body become diseased. Later, he was too weak to pursue his spiritual practice, and he realized that moderation was needed and he started to eat.
You have endless desires for money, pleasure, and possessions. The more you get, the more you want. The Bible, the Upanishads, the Yogasutra of Patanjali, the Brahmasutra, and the Torah all emphasize moderation. You have to find a limit and a balance in all these needs.
When appetite comes, think that God is giving it to you. You can live with very simple food. In southern India, people follow the principle of plain living and high thinking. Sometimes they cook the whole meal in one pot with rice, dal (lentils), and vegetables. Many Presidents, Vice-Presidents and scientists of India are from the South. They are extremely educated people who eat simple food. They make yogurt and churn it with water, adding a little salt and chili, which then becomes buttermilk. Their dress is also very simple. They work and live all over the world.
Make your food simple and wholesome, and it will give you a long and healthy life.
Lord Buddha ate the simplest food in the jungle. The five Pandava brothers - Yudhisthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva - spent twelve years in the forest and the thirteenth year in seclusion, incognito, living a simple life, with prayer and contemplation.
In the Bhagavad Gita, it is said to sleep moderately. If you avoid sleep your brain will be tired, and if you sleep too much you cannot have a good brain. Similarly, in meditation, when you pray or study, be regular and moderate.
If you live a life of moderation, as the Lord said, your practice of yoga will make you free from all miseries and suffering. Be moderate and disciplined in every aspect of your life. This is the steady path for your growth and success.
THE CLOSING CEREMONY
A Celebration of Love and Peace
May 24 - 29, 2007
The year long Birth Centenary Celebrations of Gurudev Paramahamsa Hariharanandaji came to a grand conclusion with the Closing Ceremony in Cuttack, Orissa, India, organized under the auspices of Prajnana Mission, and presided over by Paramahamsa Prajnananandaji.
The city of Cuttack took on a festive appearance with special arched decorated gates on the four sides of the city to welcome the many children of Gurudev. This six-day celebration was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, a landmark that accommodates eight thousand people and many more thousands outside. The stadium was decorated with colorful banners about Kriya Yoga and the life and teachings of Gurudev. The stage was set with a large backdrop of a life-size portrait of Gurudev in the center, with the pictures of Jagannath Temple and Shri Guru Mandir on either side. The Centenary Committee in India tended to the elaborate arrangements for press coverage, public relations, guest accommodations, transportation, and welcoming delegates from around the globe.
Huge billboards of Gurudev in prominent locations throughout the city announced the event. The reception committee worked around the clock at the airport and railway stations. Support from the municipal and police departments, district administration, and the press was tremendous. Local schools and the stadium housed guests and provided venues for the activities. Thousands of people were fed each day.
The closing event was memorable and was given extensive coverage by the press, who acclaimed it as one of the grandest celebrations that Orissa ever has seen.
Nagara Sankirtan – May 24
The prelude to the five-day Celebration was a grand nagar sankirtan in the city of Cuttack held at 5 pm on May 24. The procession of the five "chariots of love" carrying larger than life-size pictures of Gurudev Paramahamsa Hariharananda, the Kriya masters of our lineage, Lord Jagannath, and Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was accompanied with devotional music by devotees who were playing various instruments and blowing conches, and thousands of participants who walked throughout most parts of the city to reach the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, was a spectacular scene that was clearly full of great love and devotion. At the lead of the ten kilometer walk was Paramahamsa Prajnananandaji followed by several monks, yogacharyas, and kriyavans carrying flags and banners of Kriya Yoga and Gurudev.
Several local bhajan groups also joined the walk to honor Gurudev. More than five thousand people participated in the auspicious event, which was proclaimed as the most organized and peaceful procession that the city has ever seen. During the four-hour walk, shopkeepers and residents in that area stood outside, cheering on this event. What a wonderful way to present Gurudev to Cuttack City again!
The Five Day Seminar: May 25- 29
After the daily nagar sankirtan, early morning yogasana and general meditation classes open to the public were held on the stadium lawn, while meditation classes for kriyavans were held at four different venues. After breakfast there were spiritual discourses, Q&A sessions, and meditation classes. Following lunch, there were video presentations and spiritual discourses followed by meditation. Every evening there was a mahasatsang and bhajan sandhya public program in the stadium. More than 350 people were initiated into Kriya Yoga by the monks and acharyas of Gurudev's Kriya Yoga lineage.
Mahasatsang
Every day the mahasatsang started at 5 pm at the stadium with a special ceremony of lighting the lamp for Gurudev by the invited guests of honor and dignitaries. On the first day, the chief guest, Gajapati Maharaja, the king of Puri, along with others lit the lamp. Every evening, discourses were given by spiritual luminaries of various ashrams and orders who gave their respect and love for Gurudev, shared their words of wisdom and blessed the congregation.
Spiritual luminaries included Swami Gurusevananda, Dadaji Hridaya Mohini, Babaji Rabinarayan Das, Swami Nirliptananda Saraswati, Swami Virajananda Giri, Swami Sadananda Saraswati, Tapasvi Kalyan Das Maharaj, Babaji Chaitanya Charan Das, Swami Satyaprajnananda, Swami Jnanananda, Shri Shri Baba Thakur, Swami Jnanananda Giri, Shri Shankarananda, Shri Nijananda Saraswati, Shri Prakashji, and others.

Many saints and seers from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari graced the occasion.
New Book Releases
Many books, booklets, souvenirs, CDs and free literature were released each day in Oriya, Hindi, Bengali, and English. A special release was the ten-volume complete works of Gurudev, a compilation of all the published and unpublished works, discourses, metaphorical interpretations of scriptures, teachings and letters of the great realized master, undertaken by his loving disciple Baba Prajnananandaji.
Bhajan Sandhya
The daily bhajan sandhya that followed was a spiritual feast of devotional songs in Oriya, Hindi, Bengali, and Sanskrit by famous artists such as Prafula Kar, Anuradha Podwal Suchitra Mohapatra, and Ajay Chakrabarty.
A special feature was a spiritual magic show by Swami Jnananandaji. The highlight was the entertainment by the amazingly talented children of our Hariharananda Balashram, the residential school for underprivileged children, who mesmerized the audience with their spiritual songs and dance and the enactment of the Ramayana.
The Interfaith Conference – May 26
The Interfaith Conference was a commemoration of Gurudev's love of all religions, and explored the holy teachings advocated by the different faiths of India. Several eminent dignitaries representing various faiths and spiritual disciplines assembled on a single platform. Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Christian, and Bahai leaders shared their views on the theme "Vasudhiava Kutumbakam: The Earth is One Family" and enlightened the audience.

Message from Paramahamsa Prajnanananda
Loving and Divine Soul,
Let the blessings of God and gurus be always upon you and your family. Please accept my love and best wishes.
There was a great effort of all the disciples and devotees to make the Centenary Celebration of Gurudev a success. The year long celebration throughout the world was not only a super success, but the achievements are beyond imagination. As you all are aware, the programs were officially celebrated in more than 108 cities all over the world. Aside from these programs, there were celebrations in many smaller localities.
The Closing Ceremony at Cuttack, Orissa, in India was the best of all. Even the people of Cuttack voluntarily came to help and to make it a beautiful event. During this centennial year, we have many beautiful achievements, such as the completion of the Shri Guru Mandir (the temple dedicated to the Masters of Kriya Yoga where Gurudev's body is buried), the publication of the Complete Works of Gurudev, titled Ocean of Divine Bliss: Complete Works of Kriya Yoga Master Paramahamsa Hariharananda, which is a unique spiritual compilation of Gurudev's teachings. It is rare spiritual work to be treasured.
The centennial year is over. I have a humble request to you all. Please meditate nicely. Do not waste precious time. Follow the teachings of Gurudev. Do not allow your mind to be confused and unnecessarily worried. Be balanced and steady on the path of prayer and meditation.
You all accept my love and prayer.
With Love,
Prajnanananda

Q: What are the qualities of a spiritually advanced person?
A: The first quality is humility. A spiritually advanced person is very humble. The second quality is being established in a state of balance. They are so balanced that they are not affected with success or failure, pleasure or pain. Spiritually advanced people are less possessive and they do not have any attachments.
Lahiri Baba's daughter was married, and when she died everyone cried. Lahiri Baba was so detached that he sat with them to discuss the Gita.
A spiritually advanced person should always help people, serve them, and guide them in their life without any expectation. A spiritually advanced person has self-control and self-discipline. Spiritually advanced people are peaceful, kind-hearted, and loving.
As a tree is known by its fruit, so a spiritually advanced person is known by his thoughts, words, and activities.
Thanks Giving Through Hard Work
By Paramahamsa Prajnanananda
Time is a flow. It brings the footprints of life in many possible ways. It also gives us the opportunity to be an instrument of God's love.
The Centenary Celebration came to an end with a beautiful program at Cuttack, Orissa. I offer my heartfelt thanks to God, gurus, many spiritual dignitaries as well as countless devotees and disciples all over the world for being an instrument of accomplishing such a great mission with countless responsibilities. Words have their limitations. I am praying for all of them from the core of my heart.
Real spiritual life is founded on two pillars: hard work and thanks giving. It is said that there is no substitute for hard work. Sincere work accompanied by prayer brings the crown of success. Let us not stop working as hard as we can.
Along with hard work, we should always develop the attitude of thanks giving to each and all.
Let us thank God for giving this human birth and the opportunity for loving and serving.
Let us thank the divine masters for guiding us in the spiritual path with their infinite compassion and love.
Let us thank our parents, family members, friends, and relatives for being a loving support for our evolution.
Let us remember God in every breath and in every step of our life.
I am praying for you all. Please continue your valuable support in all possible ways to keep the flame of revered Gurudev's teachings continuing for all time to come.
USA MOTHER CENTER NEWS
"Be calmly active and actively calm." Gurudev's instructions were put to rigorous task in this highly auspicious Centenary year. And what a year it has been! Throughout the world, disciples worked tirelessly and harmoniously towards the common goal of spreading Gurudev's message. This once in a lifetime, year-long series of events commemorating Baba's Centenary has now come and gone, and we offer our most profound thanks for the blessings bestowed.
Here at the Mother Center we went from feverish outward activity supporting the worldwide Centenary preparations to an intense phase of inner activity in our Kriya practice and study. Not only were we fortunate to have the constant loving guidance of Yogacharya Elizabeth Ma, but we were also blessed by the presence of Brahmachari Vidyanandaji and Swami Samarpananandaji, who have taken up residence for a longer stay. Their kindness and patience have helped us dive ever deeper into our practice.
A wonderful example of this was the Guru Purnima celebration. The very presence of Baba, which permeates this sacred place, seemed to be energized as the yogacharyas taught and showed us the true meaning of devotion. It is wondrous to perceive how Baba was ‘all things to all men' and took the care to individually instruct each one of us according to our needs.
Now we eagerly await another promising event, as Paramahamsa Prajnananandaji returns for an extended stay in September, offering a series of talks on Srimad Bhagavatam. The Divine Glories of Lord Krishna will be explained in the light of Kriya Yoga. It is our deepest hope that many of you will come and take advantage of this precious time with him.
The Mother Center serves as a true mother in caring for and nurturing her children. Patiently she supports and guides us, directed from Baba's own hand. Just as the mother is pleased to see her children grow and develop, so has Gurudev created this unique place as a living breathing monument to love and service. When strolling the grounds we find that he is giving countless lessons through the eloquent voice of Mother Nature.
Gurudev would surely agree with Sri Swami Sivanandaji's instruction: "Love all God's creation. Love even the leaf, love the animals, love the birds, love the plants, love everything. This is the way to knowledge of the mystery underlying them all."
We invite you all to join us when you can.
